Equipment

  • - Heavy saucepan
  • - Candy thermometer
  • cookie sheet

Ingredients

For the Apples

  • 4 pieces Fresh Tart Apples Granny Smith or Fuji are perfect choices.

For the Candy Coating

  • 2 cups Granulated Sugar High quality preferred.
  • 1 cup Light Corn Syrup Prevents crystallization.
  • 1 cup Water To dissolve the sugar and corn syrup.

For Decoration

  • 1 bottle Food Coloring Gel-based colors work best.
  • 1 tablespoon Flavoring Extract or Flavor Oil Use your favorite fruity flavor.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by washing and thoroughly drying your fresh apples. Remove the stems and firmly insert candy apple sticks into each apple, ensuring they are stable for dipping.
  • Grease a cookie sheet or line it with parchment paper to prevent the candy apples from sticking once they're coated.

Cooking

  • In a heavy saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, corn syrup, and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the mixture reaches 310°F, which is the hard crack stage.
  • Once at temperature, remove the saucepan from the heat. Carefully stir in your chosen food coloring and flavoring extract until the mixture stops bubbling.

Dipping and Cooling

  • Carefully dip each apple into the hot syrup, turning to ensure an even coat. Allow any excess syrup to drip back into the pan.
  • Place the coated apples on the prepared baking sheet to cool completely. If desired, wrap them in cellophane for later enjoyment.

Notes

Optional: Sprinkle edible glitter for a whimsical touch before the candy cools. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
