Equipment

  • 9x13 casserole dish
  • medium bowl
  • pastry cutter
  • Spatula

Ingredients

For the Base

  • 1 loaf french bread or sourdough bread for a tangy twist
  • 8 large eggs provides the rich custard base
  • 2 cups liquid whipping cream or half-and-half for a creamier texture
  • ¼ cup brown sugar or coconut sugar for a hint of caramel flavor
  • 2 tsp cinnamon brings warmth and spice
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract enhances sweetness and aroma

For the Topping

  • ½ cup cold butter cut into small pieces
  • ½ cup brown sugar for a sweet, crunchy topping
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour helps bind the topping ingredients
  • ½ Tbsp cinnamon adds an extra layer of flavor

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the loaf of bread into small 1-inch or 2-inch pieces. Gently spray a 9"x13" casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray, then set it aside while you prepare the custard mixture.
  • Beat the eggs in a medium bowl until combined, then stir in the whipping cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well mixed.
  • Pour the egg mixture into the casserole dish, then add the bread chunks. Spread it evenly, gently pressing down the bread to soak up the liquid.
  • Cover the dish with plastic wrap and let it sit in the fridge for at least four hours, preferably overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Mix together the brown sugar, all-purpose flour, and cinnamon in a medium bowl to create the topping.
  • Add the cold butter pieces into the dry mixture. Using a pastry cutter or fork, crumble the butter into pea-sized pieces.
  • Remove the casserole from the fridge and pour the buttery cinnamon crumble topping over the bread mixture.
  • Bake uncovered in the oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown and set to your liking.

Notes

Optional: Serve with fresh fruit or a drizzle of maple syrup for extra flavor. Allow to cool completely before storing.
