Ingredients
  

For the Custard

  • 8 large Eggs opt for organic or free-range for better flavor
  • 2 cups Whole Milk can substitute with almond milk
  • 1 cup Heavy Cream consider using half-and-half for lighter option
  • 1 cup Light Brown Sugar packed; can use granulated sugar in a pinch

For the Bread Layer

  • 1 lb Day-Old White Bread cut into ¾" thick slices; brioche or challah recommended

For the Toppings

  • ½ cup Sliced Raw Almonds can replace with pecans or walnuts
  • to taste Confectioners' Sugar optional, for dusting
  • 1 cup Fresh Berries optional, for garnish

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth and creamy.
  • Take each slice of bread and dip it into the custard mixture, soaking for about 4 seconds on each side, then layer them in a baking dish.
  • Pour any remaining custard evenly over the bread layer, cover tightly with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Remove the cover, sprinkle the sliced almonds over the top, and bake in the oven for about 40 minutes.
  • Allow to cool for about 10 minutes, dust with confectioners' sugar, and top with fresh berries before serving.

Notes

Optional: Serve warm with a drizzle of maple syrup for added sweetness. Ensure to beat eggs well for a consistent custard and use day-old bread for best results.
