How to Make Homemade Apple Butter Thumbprint Cookies

  • Preheat your oven to 390°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Prepare your ingredients by measuring them out into separate bowls.
  • Cream the softened butter and sugar together in a mixing bowl for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  • Add the vanilla extract to the butter and sugar mixture, mixing until combined.
  • Whisk together your dry ingredients: flour, cornstarch, baking powder, cardamom, and a pinch of salt.
  • Combine the dry ingredients into the butter mixture, mixing until just combined.
  • Roll the dough into 12 equal balls, about 1 inch in diameter, placing them 2 inches apart on the baking sheet.
  • Press your thumb into the center of each ball to create an indent.
  • Fill each indentation with apple butter, being careful not to overfill.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
  • Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for about 5-10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
