How to Make Soda Bread

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (210°C).
  • In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Whisk them together until well blended.
  • Rub in the softened butter with your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate jug, whisk together the egg (if using) and buttermilk until combined.
  • Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in about 3/4 of the liquid mixture. Gently mix to form a soft dough.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured surface and gently shape it into an 8-inch round.
  • Score a deep cross on top of the dough with a sharp knife.
  • Poke holes in each corner of the dough to allow steam to escape while baking.
  • Glaze the top with the remaining buttermilk, then place the bread in the oven. Bake for 15 minutes, then lower the temperature to 400°F (200°C) and continue baking for another 30 minutes.
  • Cool the bread on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with a generous spread of Irish butter for a delicious treat.
