Equipment

  • - Large bowl
  • - Skillet
  • Floured surface
  • Damp cloth

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp instant dry yeast or use active dry yeast, blooming it in warm water first
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp anise seeds optional
  • 1 cup plain yogurt or sour cream for a tangy variation
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 cup warm water about 100°F/38°C

For the Finishing Touch

  • 2 tbsp melted salted butter for brushing
  • 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley optional

Instructions

How to Make Naan Bread

  • In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, instant dry yeast, anise seeds (if using), and salt. Mix these dry ingredients thoroughly to ensure even distribution.
  • In a separate bowl, blend the plain yogurt, extra-virgin olive oil, and warm water.
  • Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Use a fork to stir until the dough starts coming together.
  • Transfer the dough onto a floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until it’s soft and slightly sticky.
  • Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and allow it to rise in a warm area for 1 to 1½ hours or until doubled in size.
  • Dust your work surface with flour and turn the dough out. Divide it into six equal portions.
  • Roll each portion into an oval shape, about ⅛ inch thick.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook each naan until bubbles form and bottom is golden with charred spots (approximately 2-3 minutes).
  • Brush each freshly cooked naan with melted salted butter and keep warm while cooking remaining dough.

Notes

For an aromatic twist, infuse the dough with garlic before cooking! Adjust flour amount based on its protein content.
