How to Make Irish Soda Bread

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F, then generously grease a 10” cast-iron skillet.
  • Whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking soda in a large mixing bowl until well combined.
  • Cut in the cold unsalted butter into small chunks and mix it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Create a well in the center of your dry mixture, then pour in the cold buttermilk and beaten egg. Mix gently just until combined.
  • Transfer the dough to a floured surface and shape it into a round loaf.
  • Place the loaf in your prepped skillet, and score the top with a deep 'X'.
  • Bake the bread for 50-55 minutes, or until tapping the bottom produces a hollow sound. Let cool on a wire rack.
