Ingredients
  

For the Base

  • 1 loaf French bread stale or day-old
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar for the caramel base

For the Custard Mixture

  • 6 large eggs essential for binding
  • 2 cups whole milk or substitute with almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract for flavor
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon divided

For the Topping

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar for topping
  • powdered sugar optional, for dusting
  • fresh berries optional, for serving
  • maple syrup optional, for serving

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a 13×9-inch baking dish generously.
  • Melt the unsalted butter in a saucepan over low heat, then stir in 1 cup of brown sugar until fully dissolved. Pour this mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  • Layer the cubes of French bread on top of the caramel base, pressing them down gently.
  • Whisk together the eggs, whole milk, vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon in a bowl. Pour this mixture over the bread cubes and allow them to soak for 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon and 1 1/2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the top of the casserole.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
  • Rest the casserole for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Optional: Serve with whipped cream for an indulgent treat.
