Ingredients
  

For the Casserole Base

  • 1 loaf French bread stale bread works best
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half for richness
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon divided

For the Topping

  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

For Serving (Optional)

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup fresh berries
  • 1 cup maple syrup

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and grease a 13x9-inch baking dish.
  • Melt the butter in a saucepan and stir in 1 cup of brown sugar until fully dissolved. Pour this mixture into the greased baking dish and spread it evenly across the bottom.
  • Layer the bread cubes evenly over the caramel base, pressing them down gently.
  • Whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour this egg mixture over the bread cubes and let them soak for 10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 2 teaspoons of cinnamon and 1 1/2 tablespoons of brown sugar over the top.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the casserole is golden brown.
  • Rest for 5 minutes before serving. Serve warm with optional toppings.
