For the Chicken

  • 4 pieces Chicken Thighs Bone-in, skin-on recommended
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

For the Spice Rub

  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1 tablespoon Smoked Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Chili Powder Adjust to taste
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder Can swap with fresh onions
  • 1 teaspoon Black Pepper Freshly ground recommended
  • 1 tablespoon Light Brown Sugar Granulated sugar can be substituted

For the Finishing Touch

  • 1 cup BBQ Sauce Sweet Baby Ray's recommended

How to Make Smoky BBQ Chicken

  • Pat the chicken thighs completely dry with paper towels.
  • Combine salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, chili powder, onion powder, black pepper, and brown sugar in a bowl. Mix well.
  • Generously rub the dry mixture all over the chicken thighs and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  • Set up a two-zone grill by heating one side to high and keeping the other off or low.
  • Place the thighs skin-side down on the cool side of the grill and cover. Cook for 30-35 minutes, flipping every 10 minutes.
  • Brush BBQ sauce on both sides and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes per side until caramelized.
  • Transfer the grilled chicken to a serving plate and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Notes
