Equipment

  • - Medium saucepan
  • steamer basket
  • - Small bowl

Ingredients

For the Filling

  • 6 large eggs Fresh eggs yield the best texture for creamy yolks.
  • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise Adjust for creaminess; Greek yogurt can be a lighter substitute.
  • 1.5 teaspoons yellow mustard Adds a tangy flavor; feel free to experiment with Dijon for a twist.
  • 2 dashes vinegar-based hot sauce A spicy kick that enhances overall flavor; omit if you prefer milder eggs.
  • 0.25 teaspoon garlic powder A hint of garlic brings depth; fresh garlic can be too strong, so use sparingly.
  • 1.5 tablespoons pickle relish This brings a delightful crunch; choose based on your taste preference.
  • Salt Essential for enhancing flavors; adjust to your liking.
  • Pepper Freshly cracked for extra zing; it pairs beautifully with the creamy filling.

Optional Garnish

  • Paprika A classic sprinkle for color and a hint of smoky flavor; it’s optional but highly recommended!

Instructions

How to Make Southern Deviled Eggs

  • Steam the Eggs: For easily peeled eggs, steam them instead of boiling. Add 1/2 inch of water to a medium saucepan with a steamer basket. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then turn off the heat. Carefully place the eggs in the basket, cover, and return to a boil. Steam for 12 to 15 minutes, then cool in an ice bath.
  • Slice and Scoop: Once cooled, peel the eggs carefully and slice them in half lengthwise. Gently scoop out the yolks and transfer them to a small bowl, keeping the egg whites intact for filling.
  • Mix the Filling: Mash the yolks with a fork until smooth. Add mayonnaise, yellow mustard, hot sauce, garlic powder, and pickle relish. Mix until well combined and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Fill the Egg Whites: Spoon the creamy yolk mixture back into the hollowed egg whites, filling each half generously.
  • Garnish with Flair: If desired, sprinkle with paprika or additional pepper for an appealing finish.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Avoid reheating filled eggs as it may alter the texture.
