How to Make Graduation Cake

  • Preheat your oven and bake 2 yellow sheet cakes and 2 chocolate sheet cakes in 9x13 pans, along with a 5-inch cotton candy dome cake. Let them cool completely before decorating.
  • While the cakes cool, whip up a batch of your delicious yellow buttercream frosting. This creamy base will hold your cake layers together beautifully.
  • Place the dome cake on a cake board and frost it smoothly with the buttercream. Chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes to set the frosting.
  • Roll out black fondant and gently cover the chilled dome cake. Use a fondant smoother for a flawless finish, trimming any excess fondant around the base with a pizza cutter.
  • Cut a square piece of cardboard, color the edges with a black edible marker, then spread a thin layer of icing on top. Cover it with black fondant, trimming the excess.
  • Cut a small round piece from fondant. Brush some corn syrup on the square cardboard, fold a ribbon in half, and attach it before placing the round fondant piece on top.
  • Secure the prepared square piece on top of the dome cake using melted chocolate or thick royal icing. Lightly steam to remove any powdered sugar residue.
  • Roll the Rice Krispie treats into a long cylinder shape. Spread buttercream along the sides to coat before covering it with rolled-out white fondant, trimming the excess with a sharp knife.
  • Cut out two white fondant circles and adhere them to both ends of the Rice Krispie treat log with buttercream icing. Wrap a red ribbon around your edible diploma for that final touch.
  • Position the 2 chocolate sheet cakes side by side on a large rectangle cake board. Spread a generous layer of icing on top of these cakes.
  • On the iced chocolate cakes, place the 2 yellow sheet cakes. Smooth icing evenly over the top and sides for a polished finish.
  • Fill a piping bag with yellow icing and use it to pipe lovely rose designs along the sides and top of your cake, bringing a touch of elegance.
  • Decide where to place your diploma and cap on the decorated sheet cake. For support, insert dowels or bubble tea straws to keep everything steady.
  • Gently place the cap and diploma on top of your delightful cake, ensuring everything is secure and balanced.
  • Cut out letters for 'Congratulations Class of 2024' using cookie cutters. Adhere them to the cake board with buttercream icing, adding that perfect finishing flair.
